Screens & Media

So… {deep breath} …. the use of screens and media is a challenging issue, and there is NO shame or judgment here!!  As a Counselor and a Mom, I get asked questions all the time about how to handle screen time, gaming, social media, & technology. The short answer?  I struggle with how much screen time our family should have too!  This is not an easy issue!

One thing to keep in mind is that it is not about eliminating screens; it is about having a healthier relationship with screens.  Ask yourself these questions:

  • Have you noticed that it is hard to pull your kiddo away from screen time without an epic battle?
  • Have you or a loved one skipped meals, missed appointments, or lost huge chunks of the day because of social media or gaming?
  • Is your student gaming more than studying?
  • Are video games and social media constant companions in your family?
  • Are you worried because your loved one is acting more irritable and seems more depressed or anxious?

If so, you or your loved one may be stuck and suffering from too much screen time.  There is a ton of new research on how screens and social media can have a short term and a long term impact on our brains and mental health, including anxiety and depression!!  The good news is that we humans are resilient!

The following are my two favorite resources regarding screen use and media.  They have great practical ideas and are an excellent resource when you want to review whether the latest game or movie is age-appropriate, etc.  As you know, these resources are intended to help you make informed decisions and to complement (not replace) professional advice.

If you or a loved one is struggling with over-use of screens and media, give me a call!!  You are not alone, and I would love to help you reclaim your time and your purpose in life!
